“Rwanda is rebuilding itself once again as one nation and that is the reason why we are making progress. Now many Rwandans are making their ends meet and others are able to do better than they have before.”
Paul Kagame – President of Rwanda
Introduction
Rwanda, known as the "Land of a Thousand Hills," is a landlocked country in East - Central Africa.
Rwanda is celebrated for its breathtaking landscapes and remarkable progress since the 1994 genocide. Its progress is evident in improved literacy rates, increased life expectancy, a more representative parliament, and an expanding economy. With a population of over 13 million, Rwanda is recognised across Africa for its political stability, role of women, safety and environmental consciousness. Kigali, its capital city, is one of Africa’s cleanest and fastest-growing cities.
It is against this backdrop that support is needed for the most marginalised and disadvantaged groups: children under 5, unemployed youth, the poorest women and the poorest rural communities.
With these target groups front of mind, AEE Rwanda is committed to bringing sustained change. Not short-term impact but sustainable long-term change made possible by equipping individuals to build their own lives and supported by a cultural, community and political context committed to making a difference through respect and empowerment.

How We Help?
Since 1984, AEE Rwanda has helped to transform lives, lifting people–regardless of their faith or background–from spiritual and material poverty. We have supported people in their darkest hours with what they most needed, integrating our faith in ways that were responsive and sensitive to the context and culture, while remaining true to our Christian values and convictions.
We always seek sustained change and commit to this outcome by empowering and equipping people, and by building partnerships with local government, communities and networks.
We Build People's Practical Capabilities
Rwanda continues to experience significant gaps in education, healthcare, employment rates and household income. The gaps are most often experienced in rural areas as well as between the income-rich and income-poor. For this reason, AEE Rwanda has local offices in 29 of Rwanda’s 30 districts, providing grassroots and engaged support. We target four different groups of people with learning and development activities, including education, vocational training, health, nutrition, and WASH, as well as human rights and safeguarding, livelihoods, and food security.
We Partner with Local Churches For Holistic Community Development
The local church, of many denominations, is the epicenter of the Rwandan community. It creates the social fabric that brings people together in urban and rural settings. We work in partnership with local churches to support the capacity and understanding of churches in engaging and responding to the needs of their community. We ask questions like, “Are we relevant? Are we supporting the practical, social and spiritual needs of the people?”. In this way, the churches become agents of practical, social and spiritual development. This is critical in bringing substantive, sustainable change that is supported by the social infrastructure.
